9th Virginia Cavalry & McGregor's Battery Light Artillery

Today, Company B of the 9th Virginia Cavalry consists of both mounted and dismounted troopers and is commanded by 1st Lieutenant Greg Bockniak.  Major Joe Harrel commands the 9th Virginia Medical & Provost units.  Consistent with the practices of Major General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry division of the Army of Northern Virginia, McGregor's Battery of Light Artillery is attached to the 9th Virginia Cavalry, consisting of 2 mountain Howitzers and 1 six-pound field howitzer and our newest addition a mortar.  McGregor's Battery is commanded by 1st Lieutenant Bob Scherr.

Our unit is family oriented with members coming from all walks of life and residing in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.  We participate at Living History Events and Reenactments in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa as well as attend national events throughout the United States.  Recent national events have included Raymond, MS, Gettysburg, PA, Shiloh, TN, Wilson's Creek, MO, Fort Bellefontaine, MO, Westport, MO, Sayler's Creek, VA, and Perryville, KY.  Local events have included Franklin Grove, IL, Boscobel, WI, Stockton, IL, Wade House, WI, Clinton, IA, Marengo, IL, Wauconda, IL, Brodhead, WI, Black River Falls, WI, Stoughton, WI, and Jackson, MI.

Wherever we go, we are committed to contributing to the overall success of the event by meeting the goals of our hosts through the authentic portrayal of actively-campaigning American cavalrymen of the 1860's.   On occasion we are prepared to help meet the needs of the event by "galvanizing" or outfitting as Union cavalry in the guise of the 3rd West Virginia, Co. M.  Rest assured, this is only a temporary arrangement.

The reenactors of Company B are very aware of the responsibility we have to accurately portray the American heroes of the original 9th Virginia Cavalry with dignity and respect.  It is with great pride that we carry on this heritage of honor, pride, and courage.  We proudly fly the Confederate Regimental Battle flag as a historically accurate symbol of one of this great nation's history and heritage.  In our context, this flag is a symbol of HERITAGE, not hate.  We strongly oppose any group that uses this flag for any other purpose.
